Hawkeye Women, 6 Individuals Earn Academic Honor

July 25, 2013

IOWA CITY, Iowa — For the ninth consecutive season the University of Iowa women’s track and field team has been named an all-academic team by the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA). The Hawkeyes combined for a team grade point average of 3.19 through the 2013 indoor and outdoor seasons.

To qualify for this distinction, a team must have a 3.00-cumulative GPA at the end of the NCAA championship season. Iowa was one of 10 Big Ten schools to make the list comprised of 187 Division I women’s track and field teams.

The USTFCCCA also named six Hawkeye student-athletics to the Division I All-Academic Track & Field team. Mareike Schrulle, Jasmine Simpson, Annemie Smith, Kyle Reid, Keaton Rickels and Ben Stancombe were among the more than 1,000 Division I student-athletes to earn the honor. The Big Ten has 146 academic honorees, more than any other conference.

To qualify for the USTFCCCA All-Academic Track and Field Team, the student-athlete must have compiled a cumulative grade point average of 3.25 and have met either of the following athletic standards: for the indoor season, a student-athlete must have finished the regular season ranked in the national top 96 in an individual event or ranked in the national top 48 (collective listing) in a relay event on the official NCAA POP list provided by TFRRS.org; for the outdoor season, a student-athlete must have participated in any round of the NCAA Division I Championships.

“One of our clearly defined goals every year is academic excellence. To earn this recognition for the ninth consecutive year and have six individuals achieve individual academic honors is a strong statement for the track and field program,” said head track and field coach Layne Anderson.
