Wisconsin Dells, Wis. — The University of Iowa spirit squads attended camp with Universal Cheerleaders Association/Universal Dance Association (UCA/UDA) from August 1-4.
This year’s camp took place at Chula Vista Resort in Wisconsin Dells, Wis. — a new location for UCA/UDA in 2013. Teams used the Wisconsin Dells Center, a bubble structure slightly larger than a football field, resort ballrooms, and outdoor tent areas for classes. More than 2,000 spirit squad members attended camp from various colleges including nine Big Ten teams.
The Iowa cheerleaders placed first in fight song and sideline, second in cheer and game day presence among Big Ten schools. They also received a game planning award for their game day traditions. Other teams voted for Iowa to receive the camp leadership award, an award given to the team people would most like to be on, if they were not on their own squads.
The Iowa dance team had a superior showing with its home routine to the song ‘We Belong Together’ earning them fourth place. The squad received a superior award for its fight song routine, which is performed at home football games after touchdowns, and it received a Most Collegiate Award for Division IA schools.
Herky mascots earned fifth place for their home routine, a routine parodying the show ‘Behind The Music’. They were given a most improved award, as well as superior awards for character and program.
“It was a great experience for all of our teams”, said UI spirit coordinator Gregg Niemiec. “It is great to learn new material for the season, and at the same time, see how we stack up among some of the top teams in the country.”
The ISS learned many new skills that will be seen this fall at Kinnick Stadium. The first game is against Northern Illinois on August 31 beginning at 2:30 p.m. (CT).
