IOWA CITY, Iowa — University of Iowa freshman Alyssa Klostermann is a “Face in the Crowd” in the latest issue of Sports Illustrated. The setter is one of seven athletes recognized for her accomplishments by the magazine.

“It’s a huge honor for me, and I wouldn’t have been able to do it without my coaches and teammates,” said Klostermann, a native of Dubuque, Iowa. “It is an amazing feeling and such an honor. I’m so happy for it.”

“Faces in the Crowd” column editor Ali Fenwick says Klostermann’s successful summer season with the Iowa Rockets spurred her selection.

Klostermann led the club team to a 2012-13 Girls Junior National Championship title in Dallas, Texas. The setter was named most valuable player of the championship, to the all-tournament team and was selected as team captain of the all-tournament team.

Klostermann believes her experience in competition at nationals and her additional club experiences, including a fifth place finish at the Girls Junior National Championships in Atlanta, Ga. in 2010-11, have been integral to her development as a player. She now looks to the Iowa volleyball program to help her take the next step in her game.

“My club team was an amazing group of girls, and we were coached by amazing coaches that are very knowledgeable about volleyball,” said Klostermann. “It is one of the most memorable things of my life. Going from that to Iowa is a big step to a different level of volleyball, but it’s another opportunity for me to play the sport I love.

“Coming off of a national win makes me even more excited to keep living my dream of playing volleyball.”

Klostermann and the Hawkeyes will take the court for the Black and Gold Scrimmage on Saturday, Aug. 24, at 7 p.m. on Mediacom Court inside Carver-Hawkeye Arena. Iowa opens regular season action on the road at the Chanticleer Invitational on Aug. 30-31 in Conway, S.C.

Klostermann is the second Iowa student-athlete to be recognized in “Faces in the Crowd” this summer, as women’s golf freshman Jessie Sindlinger was featured in the issue published on July 29. The column has been published every week in Sports Illustrated since 1956.
