THIS WEEK
The University of Iowa women’s golf team travels to Albuquerque, N.M., Sept. 20-21 to compete in the Branch Law Firm-Dick McGuire Invitational hosted by the University of New Mexico. The 54-hole tournament will be held at the UNM Championship Course (par 73, 6,167 yards). Live scoring will be available via golfstat.com throughout the tournament.
QUOTING HEAD COACH Megan Menzel
“I have been very pleased with effort in practice this week, and I think the team is making great strides with their games,” said Mezel. “We have focused a lot on short game, and we have continued to see some great improvement especially on the greens. We learned a lot last week. We must be present through the whole round and stay disciplined with our mental games. Our goal each week is to go out and get a little bit better, and I think we have prepared well to do that. The Championship golf course at New Mexico is a fun track that definitely gives you some solid birdie opportunities and then also some stretches where you have to be patient and accept that par is a very good score.”
THE LINE-UP
Shelby Phillips, Karly Grouwinkel, Briana Midkiff, Jessie Sindlinger, and Nicole Rae will be competing for the Hawkeyes.
THE COMPETITION
The 16-team field consists of Colorado, Fresno State, Iowa, Iowa State, Nevada, New Mexico, UNLV, Northwestern, Oregon, Oregon State, Pepperdine, San Diego State, Texas Tech, Texas El Paso, UC Davis, and Wyoming.
ORIGINALLY A LOBO
Menzel played collegiate golf at the University of New Mexico from 1993-97, where she led the Lobos to three Western Athletic Conference titles (1994, 1995, 1996). The two-time team captain (1995, 1996), was a two-time academic all-conference selection, while being named the 1996-97 Bank of America Academic Athlete of the Year. Menzel graduated from New Mexico in 1998 with a bachelor’s degree in elementary education.
LAST TIME OUT
The Hawkeyes carded a 54-hole score of 910 (+46) to finish fourth in a field of 13 teams at the Chip-N-Club Invitational. Junior Shelby Phillips fired a 67 (-5) to tie Iowa’s all-time best single round performance record and set a new tournament record in the final round of the invite. Phillips carded a 220 (+4) to tie for a fifth place overall finish.
