MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – The University of Iowa cross country teams competed at the Roy Griak Invitational on Saturday. The men’s team finished 15th (381 points), while the women tallied 641 points to come in 21st. The event was held at the Les Bolstad Golf Course on the University of Minnesota campus.
Kevin Lewis was the top finisher for the Hawkeye men. The junior clocked an 8,000 meter personal-best time of 24:59.5 to finish 30th. Junior Ben Witt (55th; 25:17.6), freshman Kevin Docherty (96th; 25:44.6), sophomore Nate Ferree (99th; 25:46.3), and senior Sam Chaney (125th; 25:58.5) rounded out the scoring for the Hawkeyes.
“We had some outstanding individual performances in Ben Witt and Nate Ferree,” said men’s head coach Larry Wieczorek. “I thought those two had a couple special performances. We finished 15th out of 24 teams, but I think we are a better team than that. We will keep working and see what kind of improvement we can make for our next meet.”
Sophomore Courtney Martin was the top finisher for the Hawkeye women. Martin crossed the 6,000 meter line in 22:40.70 to finish 113th. Freshman Samantha Zishka (22:53.60) and junior Shannon Maser (23:02.25) finished 134th and 146th, respectively, while freshman Katie Adams (199th; 23:27.50) and senior Lena Placzek (208th; 23:35.25) rounded out the scoring for the Hawkeyes.
“We continue to pack run and show signs of growth,” said women’s head coach Layne Anderson. “With this young group, that will be important to our future success. We raced through some adverse weather and several falls, but we are certainly better for the experience. This will be a great group going forward as we develop more fitness.”
The Hawkeye women will travel to the Wisconsin Inter-Regional in Madison, Wis. on Oct. 19, while the men head to Terre Haute, Ind. for the Pre-National Invitational on Oct. 20.
