CORAL GABLES, Fla. — The University of Iowa women’s golf team fired a 300 (+16) on Tuesday in the second round of the Hurricane Invitational hosted by the University of Miami at the Biltmore Golf Course. After 36-holes, the Hawkeyes are in 13th with a team score of 602 (+34). The field consists of 17 teams, including nine nationally-ranked opponents.
“We have to stay patient and keep working to move up the leaderboard,” said UI head coach Megan Menzel. “Shelby (Phillips) has been very consistent, and as a team we have to find ways to make more pars.”
Following the conclusion of the second round, junior Shelby Phillips sits tied for 18th place. She carded a 73 (+2) and 73 (+1) for a two-round total of 145 (+3). Phillips’ score qualifies as a new career best and ranks 12th among Iowa’s all-time best 36-hole performances.
After shooting a 75 (+4) in the first and second rounds, respectively, freshman Jessie Sindlinger sits tied for 40th place on the leaderboard.
Senior Karly Grouwinkel posted a 77 (+6) in both rounds to accumulate a 36-hole total of 154 (+12) and tie for 60th.
Junior Nicole Rae is tied for 72nd with first and second round scores of 77 (+6) and 79 (+8), respectively.
Briana Midkiff recorded a 76 (+5), improving seven strokes from yesterday’s performance. Midkiff’s score of 159 (+17) ties her for 85th.
“We are seeing some good growth in all the players this spring,” said Menzel. “We are looking forward to a solid final round tomorrow.”
The tournament concludes on Wednesday with the final round beginning with a shotgun start at 7 a.m. (CT). Live scoring will be available at golfstat.com.
