Bullington Named Big Ten Golfer of the Week

March 26, 2014

IOWA CITY, Iowa — University of Iowa men’s golfer Brian Bullington has been named the Big Ten Conference Golfer of the Week, the league office announced Wednesday. The honor comes after Bullington finished third at the Arizona State University Thunderbird Invitational in Tempe, Ariz., March 21-23.

“Brian played a great tournament from start to finish,” said UI head coach Mark Hankins. “He prepared well the entire week and was able to peak during competition with two 68’s and a (-7) total. His focus was evident through the final hole, rolling in a birdie to finish third alone and help our team finish runner-up. Big Ten Player of the Week is a nice feather in his cap on top of a top-five finish and a career-best 54 hole-score. I couldn’t be more proud of him.”

Bullington carded a three-round score of 206 (-7; 68-70-68) at the 7,026-yard, par-71 Karsten Golf Course, the best 54-hole score of his career. The Frankfort, Ill., native led the Hawkeyes to a second-place finish in the 15-team field en route to his first Big Ten Golfer of the Week honor.

“I putted and chipped really well,” said Bullington. “I played conservatively on the tough holes, and picked up birdies where I could get them.

“The week of practice helped me out tremendously. We were able to play Karsten a few times before the practice round, and by the end of the week, we were very familiar with the course.”

Senior Steven Ihm garnered Iowa’s last weekly honor (Oct. 30, 2013).

Iowa resumes play April 12-13, hosting the Hawkeye-Great River Entertainment Invitational at Finkbine Golf Course. The Hawkeyes finished second in last year’s event.
