IOWA CITY, Iowa — University of Iowa head track and field coach Layne Anderson announced Tuesday that Marta Bote Gonzalez has committed to join the Hawkeyes in 2014.
Bote Gonzalez is a cross country and steeplechase runner from Merida, Spain. She placed seventh in the steeplechase at the 2013 World Youth Track and Field Championships, completing the 2,000-meter race in a personal-best 6:45.88.
She recently won the 2014 Spanish Club Cross Country Championships, and placed seventh at the 2014 Junior Championships.
“Marta is a tremendous talent who brings immediate credentials from the international level,” said Anderson. “She has tremendous versatility between cross country and track and field and is one of the great young junior runners in Spain.
“She is working to represent Spain at the World Junior Championships this summer in her journey to one day represent Spain in the Olympic Games. I am excited to welcome Marta to the Iowa program.”
Bote Gonzalez is the 14th student-athlete to sign a national letter of intent to join the Hawkeyes next fall. The 2014 recruiting class includes:
