Girl Scouts Invade Carver-Hawkeye Arena

IOWA CITY, Iowa — The University of Iowa spirit squads assisted in hosting a Girl Scout cheerleading and dance team clinic in Carver-Hawkeye Arena on May 3. The half day event had 100 participants from all over eastern Iowa.

The day started with introductions and stretching in the practice facility. From there the Girl Scouts broke into three separate groups, where they learned a dance in one group, a few sidelines in a second group and had a craft section in the third group, where they made hair bows and signs.

“It was great to work with the Girl Scout directors on this event,” said UI spirit coordinator Gregg Niemiec. “It was a fun time for all and the kids had the opportunity of a lifetime to cheer and dance inside Carver-Hawkeye Arena. Many of our team members are former Girl Scouts so there is a connection there with the younger Girl Scouts.”

At the end of the day the Girl Scouts performed for their parents inside Carver-Hawkeye Arena on the main floor. They also had a special guest appearance by Herky, who stuck around to take pictures and sign autographs after the event. All of the Girl Scouts walked away with autographed shirts, signs they had made and Iowa spirit squad calendars.

“This was a great experience,” said Niemiec. “Hopefully we can partner with the Girl Scouts again in the future and host another clinic.”

Next up for the Iowa spirit squads are summer practices, workouts, and camp in August.
