Lewis Takes 5th in 10,000 Meters

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – University of Iowa junior Kevin Lewis finished fifth in the men’s 10,000 meters in the first day of the Big Ten Outdoor Track and Field Championships. After two scored events, the men are in seventh place (4 points), while the women sit in tenth (2 points).

Lewis put four points on the board for the Hawkeye men with his fifth-place finish in the men’s 10,000 meters. The junior clocked a personal-best of 29:11.04, a time that ranks third on Iowa’s all-time list.

Annemie Smith put the Hawkeye women on the board with a seventh-place finish (2 points) in the women’s hammer throw. The junior recorded a toss of 178-2 (54.32m) on her fourth attempt. Senior Ashlyn Gulvas (172-0; 52.43m) finished 10th in the event, while senior Jasmine Simpson (165-2; 50.34m) finished 14th.

Jack Eckert competed in the first five events of the men’s decathlon. The seniors finished sixth in the 400 meters when he clocked a 51.62. Eckert recorded 10th-place finishes in both the high jump (6-0 ¾; 1.85m) and the shot put (38-4 ¾; 11.70m), and 11th place finishes in the 100 meters (11.86) and the long jump (20-4 ½; 6.21m). Eckert sits in 11th place with 3,310 points.
