3 Hawkeyes Earn Silver on Day 2 of B1G Championships

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — The University of Iowa track and field team captured three silver medals and qualified for the finals in 11 different events on day two of the Big Ten Outdoor Track and Field Championships. After seven scored events, the Hawkeye men are tied for eighth place (20 points) while the women are in ninth (15 points).

Seniors Zinna Miller and Carisa Leacock scored a combined 12 points for the Hawkeye women in the long jump. Miller grabbed a second-place finish when she recorded a personal-best leap of 20-4 ¼ (6.20m). Her mark ranks second on Iowa’s all-time list. Leacock also recorded a personal-best. Her leap of 19-11 ¾ (6.09m) secured a fifth-place finish and ranks fourth all-time at Iowa.

Sophomore Kevin Spejcher grabbed the men’s high jump silver medal. Spejcher cleared a height of 7-0 ¼ (2.14m); marking the second time he has cleared the seven-foot mark in the last two meets.

Gabe Hull finished second in the men’s discus. The junior recorded a toss of 198-2 (60.40m) on his fourth attempt to secure eight points for Iowa.

Senior Amanda Stahle added a point for the Hawkeye women with an eighth-place finish in the javelin. Stahle recorded a personal-best toss of 148-0 (45.11m). Her mark ranks eighth all-time at Iowa. Sophomore Dakotah Goodell finished ninth in the event with a personal-best throw of 146-9 (44.72m). Her mark ranks ninth all-time at Iowa.

Jack Eckert earned an eighth-place finish (6,759 points) in the men’s decathlon to add a point to the team score. The senior finished first in the 1,500 meters when he crossed the line in 4:30.87. He tallied fourth-place finishes in the pole vault (14-5 ¼; 4.40m) and the javelin (176-5; 53.77m). Eckert’s personal-best discus toss of 119-8 (36.47m) earned him a seventh-place finish, while his 110-meter hurdles time of 15.93 was good enough for 10th.

“We fought hard in the finals and to advance to the finals today,” said head coach Layne Anderson. “Both teams are positioned well for Sunday, but we will have to finish the job to position ourselves in the overall standings.”

Ten individuals and one relay team qualified for finals in 11 different events throughout the day.

The men’s 400-meter relay team of junior Keith Brown, sophomore James Harrington, senior Tevin-Cee Mincy, and freshman O’Shea Wilson recorded a season-best time of 39.73 to qualify for finals. Their time ranks fourth all-time at Iowa.

Freshman Brittany Brown and sophomore Lake Kwaza qualified for finals in the 100 and 200 meters. Brown recorded a 100 meters preliminary time of 11.64, while Kwaza crossed the line in 11.76. Brown recorded the second-fastest 200 meters preliminary time of 23.80, while Kwaza followed close behind in 24.11.

Wilson qualified for the men’s 100 and 200-meter finals. Wilson clocked a 10.53 in the 100 before recording a time of 21.34 in the 200. Harrington also qualified for the men’s 200-meter final. The sophomore clocked a personal-best time of 21.16.

Freshman Aaron Mallett clocked a 14.09 to qualify for the men’s 110-meter hurdle finals. Keith Brown finished 12th in the event with a time of 14.37.

Elexis Guster will represent the Hawkeye women the 400 meters final. The freshman clocked a prelim time of 54.21.

Sophomore MonTayla Holder recorded a personal-best time of 59.08 in the women’s 400-meter hurdles to qualify for finals. Her time ranks third all-time at Iowa.

Will Teubel qualified for the men’s 800 meters final when he clocked a personal-best time of 1:49.77. His time ranks seventh all-time at Iowa. Freshman Katharina Trost finished 13th in the women’s 800 meter prelims. Trost recorded a personal-best of 2:09.11, a time that ranks ninth on Iowa’s all-time list.

Juniors Shannon Maser and Ben Witt each qualified for the 1,500 meters final. Maser clocked a personal best time of 4:30.40 in the women’s event, while Witt crossed the line in 3:52.28.

“We had some outstanding performances in the finals today with people putting points on the board,” said director of track and field Larry Wieczorek. “We advanced a lot of people, and we are excited about where we are at heading into tomorrow.”
