IOWA CITY, Iowa — University of Iowa head volleyball coach Bond Shymansky announced the 2014 schedule today. The Hawkeyes are scheduled to play 10 matches at home against Big Ten opponents on Mediacom Court in Carver-Hawkeye Arena.
Iowa begins the year with three tournaments on the road at Texas A&M, Arizona State, and South Dakota State before heading to Iowa State on Sept. 20 for its annual Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk Series match. Sept. 24 marks the Big Ten opener as the Hawkeyes head to Lincoln, Nebraska, to challenge the Cornhuskers.
After a nearly month-long road stint, Iowa opens its home slate with a Sept. 27 match against Nebraska. The home stand continues with matches against Ohio State and reigning NCAA champion Penn State on Oct. 3 and Oct. 4, respectively.
The Hawkeyes challenge Michigan State and Michigan on the road the following weekend, Oct. 10-11, before returning to Iowa City for a pair of matches against Illinois on Oct. 15 and Northwestern on Oct. 18. A four-match road stint follows, as the team challenges NCAA runner-up Wisconsin, Minnesota, and conference newcomers Maryland and Rutgers.
The UI hosts Indiana and Purdue the following week with matches on Nov. 5 and Nov. 8, respectively. Following a midweek match against the Nittany Lions in University Park, Pennsylvania, on Nov. 12, the Hawkeyes are back in action in Carver-Hawkeye Arena against Wisconsin on Nov. 15.
After a pair of road contests at Ohio State on Nov. 19 and Northwestern on Nov. 22, Iowa closes regular season play in Iowa City against Maryland on Nov. 26 and Michigan State on Nov. 29.
The Hawkeyes compiled an 11-21 record in 2013 and finished 11th in Big Ten standings with a mark of 2-18. In his first year at the helm of the program, Shymansky returns 10 student-athletes and adds six newcomers to the roster for the fall.
