THIS WEEK
The University of Iowa cross country team hosts the Big Ten Preview on Saturday at the Ashton Cross Country Course. Action begins at 8 a.m. (CT) with the women’s 6,000 meters. The men’s 8,000 meters will follow at 8:45 a.m.
B1G PREVIEW COMPETITION/RANKINGS
Including Iowa (12/10), the Big Ten Preview features five teams in the women’s race and four in the men’s. Kansas State (–/15), Michigan (3/1), and Wisconsin (2/4) compete in both races. Northwestern (7) competes on the women’s side. (Regional rankings men/women.) Michigan is the top-ranked women’s team in the country.
LEWIS ROLLS ON ASHTON
Senior Kevin Lewis has placed first twice, and second once in three career races at the Ashton Cross Country Course. He won 2011 Iowa Invite and 2013 Black & Gold Invitational, and placed second at the 2011 Iowa Open.
ASHTON DEBUTS
Fourteen Hawkeyes, seven women and seven men, are expected to make their Ashton Cross Country Course debuts Saturday. The women include Kelly Breen, Courtney Bruns, Lindsey Bruns, Marta Bote Gonzalez, Alana Jones, Carolyn Newhouse, and Anna Reishmann. The men include Anthony Gregorio, Sam McElhiney, Michael Melchert, Brook Price, Connor Simmons, Josh Sindelar, and Taylor Soltys.
MEN’S STREAK IS AT 5
The men have crowned an individual champion at home in five consecutive races (Jeff Thode, 2010 Iowa Invite; Jeff Thode, 2011 Iowa Open; Kevin Lewis, 2011 Iowa Invite; Kevin Docherty, 2013 Hawkeye Early Bird; Kevin Lewis, 2013 Black & Gold Invite). The last time the Hawkeye men did not have an individual champion at home was the 2010 Hawkeye Invite on Sept. 3, 2010.
ADAMS, BRUNS ARE TOP FINISHERS THROUGH 2
Redshirt freshman Courtney Bruns and sophomore Katie Adams have been Iowa’s top finishers in two races this season. Bruns opened the season with an eighth place (15:08) finish at the Drake Bulldog 4K Classic. Adams paced the Hawkeyes at the Illinois State Invitational, crossing the 5,000-meter finish line in 17:51 to place sixth overall.
IN THE RANKINGS
Both the men’s and women’s cross country teams appeared in the most recent USTFCCCA Regional Rankings released Monday. The men’s cross country team checked in at No. 12, moving up three spots since the preseason, while the women’s team is ranked No. 10.
COURSE RECORDS
The men’s and women’s 6,000 and 8,000-meter course records were both set on Oct. 31, 2004 ,at the Big Ten Championships. Danette Doetzel of Michigan State completed the women’s 6,000 meters in 20:33, and Wisconsin’s Simon Bairu completed the men’s 8,000 meters in 23:45.
2014 BIG TEN CHAMPIONSHIPS
Iowa will host the 2014 Big Ten Championships at the Ashton Cross Country Course on Nov. 2. This year’s meet marks the 100th running of the Big Ten Men’s Cross Country Championships. For more information the B1G Championships page at hawkeyesports.com.
