THIS WEEK: The University of Iowa women’s golf team hosts the Diane Thomason Invitational this weekend at Finkbine Golf Course (par 72, total yards 6,142) in Iowa City, Iowa. The 54-hole tournament will begin with an 8:30 a.m. (CT) shotgun start on Saturday (36 holes) and conclude with an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start on Sunday (18 holes). Live scoring will be available throughout the tournament at the Iowa women’s golf schedule page and at golfstat.com.
HONORING DIANE THOMASON: Diane Thomason coached the University of Iowa women’s golf team from 1975-2002. She coached seven All-Big Ten selections and led the Hawkeyes to their first Big Ten title in 1991. Her coaching honors include 1990 and 1991 Big Ten Coach of the Year, 1990 National Golf Coaches Association Coach of the Year, and 1985 LPGA National Coach of the Year. She was inducted in to the National Golf Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 1995 and the National Iowa Varsity Club Athletics Hall of Fame in 2013, and continues to lead the USA World University Championships teams, a position she assumed in 1986.
FRESHMEN IP AND SUAREZ LEAD HAWKEYES: Jessica Ip and Elisa Suarez paced Iowa at the East and West Match Play Challenge in Ann Arbor, Michigan, Sept. 20-22. Ip and Suarez had the best outings for the Hawkeyes, both finishing in the top-20. Ip carded a two round 148 (+4), posting rounds of 77 and 71, tying for ninth place. Suarez registered a 151 (+7), posting rounds of 72 and 79, tying for 16th place.
THE COMPETITION: The field includes 13 teams: Iowa, Boston University, Chattanooga, Delaware, Illinois, Indiana State, North Dakota State, Northern Illinois, Oakland University, South Dakota State, Southern Illinois, Wichita State and Winthrop.
LAST TIME AT THOMASON INVITE: Iowa finished sixth out of twelve teams at last year’s Diane Thomason Invitational in Iowa City, Iowa carding, a three round 922 (+58), posting rounds of 304, 312 and 306. Jessie Sindlinger registered the best finish for the Hawkeyes with a 230 (+14), posting rounds of 74, 81 and 75, ending with a top-20 finish (19th).
ON THE HORIZON: The Hawkeyes have a weekend off before they travel to Starkville, Mississippi, to compete in the Old Waverly Bulldog Invitational on Oct. 20-22.
