IOWA CITY, Iowa— University of Iowa freshman Marta Bote Gonzalez won the 3,000-meter steeplechase title at the Spanish Junior Championships last weekend.
Bote Gonzalez coasted to a first-place finish in 10:46.81 to qualify for the 2015 European Junior Track and Field Championships on July 16-19 in Eskilstuna, Sweden.
“After a long year of collegiate competition it is great to see Marta competing well and earning an opportunity to compete at the European Junior Championships later this month,” said UI cross country coach Layne Anderson. “These meets are a crucial part of her development and stepping stones to her ultimate goal of one day competing in the World Championship or Olympic Games for Spain.”
Bote Gonzalez set the steeplechase school record (10:23.15) and qualified for the NCAA Championships in her first year in Iowa City. She is one of three former or current Hawkeyes competing in an international championship event this summer.
Freshman Reno Tuufuli will represent Team USA in the discus at the Pan Am Junior Championships in Edmonton, Canada, on July 31-Aug. 2, and former UI All-American Erik Sowinski will represent Team USA in the 800 meters at the World Championships on Aug. 22-30 in Beijing, China.
