IOWA CITY, Iowa — Sophie Liu (Vancouver, B.C.) has signed a National Letter of Intent to attend the University of Iowa next fall, UI head women’s golf coach Megan Menzel announced Thursday.

“This is a big day for Iowa Golf,” said Menzel. “Sophie is such a great addition to our young and talented roster, and we welcome her to the Hawkeye Family. Sophie comes to Iowa as the 26th best player in the 2016 class and we are thrilled that she felt like Iowa was the best fit for her.”

Liu, who attends Viera High School (Florida), is a two-time state qualifier and All-Conference selection (2014, 2015). She earned the coach’s award in 2014 and team MVP honors in 2015.

The 2015 Florida State (3A) Runner-Up (-4; 140) guided her team to a third-place finish. Liu also helped her team to a state title in 2014, carding a nine-over-par 153 en route to an eighth-place finish.

Liu, the 2015 Cape Coast Conference Individual Champion, helped her team to back-to-back conference titles (2014, 2015), and won the District 73 Championship as a junior. She currently holds school records for the lowest season average (72.0) and highest finish at a state competition (2nd).

This year, the Vancouver, B.C., native has won two tournaments — the FSGA Girls Championship and a Florida Junior Tour event at Eagle Creek — and finished runner-up twice. In nine tournaments (22 rounds) in 2015, Liu owns a 75.4 stroke average.

“Sophie is fairly new to the game and has shown tremendous growth in a very short time,” said Menzel. “She has a very strong work ethic and a strong desire to be the best. She will make an immediate impact on our roster next year.”
