SEBRING, Fla. — University of Iowa women’s golf signee Sophie Liu was named Florida Today’s 2015 High School Golfer of the Year on Monday.
The 2015 Florida State (3A) Runner-Up (-4; 140) guided Viera High School to a third-place finish at the state tournament. Liu — who will join the Hawkeyes in the fall of 2016 — was tied for first after 36 holes of play. Following a one-hole playoff, Liu was awarded second-place.
The Vancouver, B.C., native was the 2015 Cape Coast Conference Individual Champion. She currently holds school records for the lowest season average (72.0) and highest finish at a state competition (2nd).
Liu won two tournaments — the FSGA Girls Championship and a Florida Junior Tour event at Eagle Creek — and finished runner-up twice. Most recently, Liu tied for 35th at the Women’s Dixie Amateur week at Heron Bay Golf Club in Coral Springs, Florida (Dec. 16-19). In nine tournaments (22 rounds) in 2015, Liu owned a 75.4 stroke average.
