VAIL, Colo. — The University of Iowa women’s golf team is tied for sixth place after posting a 299 (+11) in the first round of the Golfweek Conference Challenge on the Fazio Course at the Red Sky Golf Club on Monday.

San Diego State leads the field (287; -1), while Pepperdine sits in second ( 291; +3).
 

“Today was a solid start for the Hawkeyes.,” said head coach Megan Menzel. “It was a good team effort and the team managed the course quite well today.  Tomorrow will be tough pins and we will have to be patient.”
 

Juniors Jessica Ip and Elisa Suarez paced the Hawkeyes, both posting a first round 74 (+2). Ip made par on ten holes and added three birdies on holes five, 13, and 14, while Suarez made par on twelve holes and scored two birdies on holes six and eight. The pair is tied for 19th.

Freshman Sophie Liu recorded the second-best finish of the day for Iowa. The freshman made par on 11 holes and carded two birdies en route to a 75 (+3). Liu is currently tied for 29th.

Shawn Rennegarbe followed with a four-over-par 76. The sophomore made par or better on 15 holes in first round action, including a birdie on hole seven. Rennegarbe is tied for 39th heading into tomorrow’s second round.

Rounding out the Hawkeye lineup is senior Jessie Sindlinger, who carded a 77 (+5). Sindlinger’s first round was highlighted by seven holes at par and three birdies on holes two, eight, and 12. She is tied for 48th after first round of action.
