Heffner Finishes 2nd Off 1-Meter

SOUTH BEND, Ind. — Senior Brandis Heffner and sophomore Will Brenner paced the University of Iowa swimming and diving team on the first day of its dual at Notre Dame on Thursday afternoon at the Rolfs Aquatic Center.

34535 Heffner finished as runner-up off the 1-meter springboard with a score of 306.60, edging Brenner by .60 points, who finished third. 
 
On the women’s side, freshman Thelma Strandberg was the highest finishing Hawkeye off the 3-meter, placing fourth with a score of 272.25.
  
Iowa also posted six top-three finishes in the pool, but all six races were exhibition swims. 
 
The men tallied second and third-place finishes in the 200-freestyle relay.  The quartet of R.J. Hemmingsen, Joe Myhre, Brandon Farnum, and Steve Fiolic touched in second in 1:22.78, while Will Scott, Jackson Halsmer, Matt Kamin, and Jack Smith were third in 1:22.82.
 
Iowa also got a runner-up finish in the final event of the night — the 400-medley relay.  Kenneth Mende, Isaak Webb, Jerzy Twarowski, and Smith touched in 3:23.97.
 
Senior Emma Sougstad posted the women’s best finish, placing second in the 100 IM with a time of 57.44 seconds.  She was also part of the third-place 200-freestyle and 400-medley relays. 
 
Freshman Hannah Burvill, junior Mekenna Scheitlin, and freshman Allyssa Fluit joined Sougstad on the third-place 200-free relay that finished in 1:34.61. 
 
Senior Meghan Lavelle, Sougstad, Scheitlin, and Burvill were third in the 400-medley relay, touching in 3:46.72.
