PUERTO VALLARTA, Mexico — University of Iowa junior Jessica Ip fired a 75 (+3) in the opening round of the Hawkeye-El Tigre Invitational on Sunday afternoon to pace the Iowa women’s golf team at the El Tigre Golf Club. The Hawkeyes are in 13th place with a 317 (+29).
“Our team must be tougher under windy conditions,” said UI head coach Megan Menzel. “We did not respond to the challenge the golf course presented today. We must come back tomorrow with better shot making decisions and a better effort around the greens.”
Washington leads the team field with a seven-over-par 295. UTSA followed two strokes behind at 297 (+9).
Ip utilized five birdies — including three on the back nine to card a 75 (+3). She is tied for 21st overall with 36 holes left to play.
Freshman Sophie Liu followed, posting a 79 (+7). Her round was highlighted by 11 holes at par or better, including birdies on holes nine, 14 and 16. Liu is tied for 51st heading into Monday’s second round.
Jessie Sindlinger posted an 81 (+9) in the opening round. The senior recorded 10 holes at par or better, including a birdie on hole 12 and an eagle on the par-five 14th hole. Sindlinger is tied for 59th overall.
Sophomore Kristen Glesne (82; +10) and junior Elisa Suarez (85 (+13) rounded out the Hawkeye lineup. Glesne and Suarez are tied for 62nd and 73rd, respectively.
Sophomore Shawn Rennegarbe and junior Morgan Kukla both competed as individuals. The duo each carded an eight-over-par 80. They are tied for 55th with two rounds left to play.
The Hawkeyes return to action tomorrow afternoon for the second round of the Hawkeye-El Tigre Invitational with a shotgun start at 2 p.m. (CT). Live scoring is available at golfstat.com.
