TUCSON, Arizona – Freshmen Jenny Kimbro and Allison Wahrman, and sophomore Tria Seawater-Simmons opened up the 2017 Jim Click Shooutout in the heptathlon on Thursday.
The trio competed on four of the seven events on the campus of the University of Arizona with Kimbro leading the Hawkeyes, sitting in 5th place with 3,097 points. Seawater-Simmons is close behind in seventh with 3,025 points and Wahrman is 20th overall with 2,598 points.
Kimbro led Iowa in the first event, placing third in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 13.94, while Seawater-Simmons tied for runner-up in the high jump, notching a height of 1.63m (five feet, four inches).
In the 200 meters, Iowa had two athletes finish in the top-10 and grab a couple personal bests. Seawater-Simmons (24.96) set a personal best, finishing third and Kimbro’s 25.21 was a personal best and landed her in fifth place.
Looking ahead to tomorrow’s heptathlon finale, Kimbro, who entered Iowa’s all-time top-10 in the pentathlon during her first competition in the indoor season, will seek another top-10 finish in her first heptathlon of her career. She is 976 points away from tying Angie Hensel for 10th place all-time.
The Hawkeyes complete the heptathlon tomorrow. The heptathlon long jump competition is set to begin at 1 p.m. (CT) and finish with the javelin throw and 800 meters.
