Ip Paces Hawkeyes Through 36 at B1G Championships

CINCINNATI, Ohio — The University of Iowa women’s golf team carded a 311 (+23) in the second round of the Big Ten Championships on a cold and windy Saturday at TPC River’s Bend in Cincinnati, Ohio. The Hawkeyes are in 11th place (623; +47) with 18 holes left to play.

No. 12 Northwestern (-3; 573) leads the team race after carding a three-under-par 285 on Saturday. Michigan State is in second at 581 (+5), while No. 30 Ohio State is in third with a 590 (+14).

“We have not played our best, but we are going to compete to the end of the tournament,” said UI head coach Megan Menzel. “We will not give up and we will fight until the end.  We saw some good things today and we got off to a better start, but this course is certainly challenging our confidence and we need to be stronger tomorrow.”

Jessica Ip led the Hawkeyes for the second straight day. The junior carded a four-over-par 76 in round two to bring her two-day total to 151 (+7). Ip made par or better on 12 holes with birdies on holes two, eight and 13. She is tied for 18th overall heading into Sunday’s final round.  

Senior Jessie Sindlinger climbed 15 spots on the leaderboard after carding a four-over-par 76 in round two. Her day was highlighted by 13 holes at par or better, including a birdie on hole five. She is tied for 36th with a two-day total of 155 (+11).

Sophie Liu registered the third-best round of the day for the Hawkeyes. The freshman made par or better on 11 holes en route to a six-over-par 78. She is tied for 67th overall with a 36-hole total of 162 (+18).

Junior Elisa Suarez carded an 81 (+9) in Saturday’s second round. She made par on 10 holes, including five of her last six. Suarez is tied for 67th with a two-day total of 162 (+18).

Junior Morgan Kukla and redshirt sophomore Shawn Rennegarbe rounded out the Hawkeye lineup, carding an 84 (+12) and 85 (+13), respectively. Kukla is tied for 62nd at 161 (+17), while Rennegarbe is in 79th with a two-day total of 168 (+24).

The third and final round of the 2017 Big Ten Championship begins tomorrow at 7 a.m. (CT) with tee times off of holes 1 and 10. Live scoring is available at golfstat.com.
