Iowa Opens 2017 Season With Hawkeye Invitational

THIS WEEK
The University of Iowa men’s and women’s cross country teams kick off the 2017 season hosting the Hawkeye Invitational on Friday. The Hawkeyes host Illinois State, Iowa State, Iowa Central, Drake, UNI, and Creighton at the Ashton Cross Country Course. The women’s 4,000-meter race begins at 6 p.m. (CT). The men’s 6,000 meters begins at 6:45 p.m. Admission is free.

ASHTON CROSS COUNTRY COURSE
The University of Iowa men’s and women’s cross country teams home for training and competition is the Ashton Cross Country Course. Located west of the Finkbine Golf Course, the course first opened in 2003 and since hosted the 2014 Big Ten Championships and 2016 NCAA Regional. The course boasts a rolling terrain with an outstanding rhythm for running and offers our team the ability to race from 3,000 meters to 10,000 meters around a layout that enables spectators to view entire race from start to finish.

IN THE RANKINGS
The University of Iowa men’s cross country team is ranked No. 11 in the Midwest Region. The Hawkeyes are one of three Big Ten teams ranked in the top 15. They are joined by No. 3 Illinois and No. 5 Minnesota.

HASENBANK REMOVES INTERIM TAG FROM COACHING TITLE
Randy Hasenbank was named cross country’s associate head coach/assistant track and field coach after severing as interim for a year. In his first season, the men’s and women’s cross country teams finished 11th and 17th, respectively, at the NCAA Regional.

MEN’S TOP RUNNERS
Junior Ian Eklin and sophomore Nathan Mylenek both return for 2017 season for the Hawkeyes.  This marks Eklin’s third consectuive year running in the Hawkeye Invitational. He finished 13th in 2016 with a time of 18:37.8, and was Iowa’s top finisher in 2015 placing third with a time of 19:13.5. Mylenek is running in this event for the second time. The sophomore finished 28th with a time of 18:48.5 in 2016.   

WOMEN’S TOP RUNNERS
Juniors Madison Waymire and Andrea Shine will both be running in the Hawkeye Invitational for the second time. Waymire was the second finisher for Iowa in 2016 when she finished third with a time of 10:21.9. In 2015, Waymire was Iowa’s top finisher, placing fifth with a 10:29.2 time. Shine’s 10:36.1 time was good enough for 14th last year, and Iowa’s third finisher. In 2015, Shine was once again Iowa’s third finisher, placing 16th with a time of 10:46.

MYLENEK TAKES SLIVER AT PAN AMERICAN GAMES
Sophomore Nathan Mylenek took silver in 3,000 meter steeplechase at the 2017 Pan American Games, finishing in 9:00.70. Mylenek beat the the third place finisher by 2.52 seconds.

HAWKEYE NEWCOMERS
The University of Iowa cross country team added 9 student-athletes to its 2017 roster including seven women and three men. Noah Healy, Evan Jacobs, and Jeff Robert join the men’s team.  Mary Arch, Maddie Carver, Maren Jeppson, Wren Renquist, Addie Swanson, and Aly Weum join the women’s team.

NEXT UP FOR THE HAWKEYES
The Hawkeyes head to Lincoln, Nebraska, for their next race at the Woody Greeno Invite on Saturday, Sept. 16.
