SOUTH BEND, Ind. — The University of Iowa swimming and diving team notched 16 top five finishes on the opening day of competition at the Shamrock Invitational in South Bend, Indiana.
Three Big Ten teams are competing in the six-team field — Iowa, Ohio State, Wisconsin. Notre Dame, Missouri State (men-only), and Akron (women-only) are also competing. The Iowa men currently sit in third in the team race, while the women are fifth.
MEN’S HIGHLIGHTS
The Hawkeyes notched three top-five finishes in the 50 free with junior Jack Smith placing third in 20.32. Sophomore Joe Myhre and junior Michal Brzus tied for fourth with a time of 20.42. The trio along with Will Scott also posted a runner-up finish in the 200-free relay with a time of 1:20.00.
Kenneth Mende, Daniel Swanepoel, Jerzy Twarowski, and Smith finished fifth in the 400-medley relay with a time of 3:16.99, before the quartet posted another fifth-place finish in the 200-medley relay, touching in at 1:29.57.
Twarowski also posted an NCAA “B” qualifying time of 48.23 in the 100 fly to finish third. Brzus touched in at 48.90 to finish sixth in the event.
Sophomore Michael Tenney led the Hawkeyes in the 400 IM, finishing fourth in 3:57.44. Senior Chris Dawson finished seventh with a time of 4:01.42 in the event.
Mende would post another top five finish in the 100 back, touching in at 49.16 to finish fourth. Mende, Tenney, Smith and Myhre tallied a fifth place finish in the 800-free relay with a time of 6:43.06.
In the diving well, senior Matt Mauser posted an NCAA Zone Standard score of 316.40 off the 1-meter springboard to finish third. Junior Will Brenner also posted a zone standard score of 305.35 to finish fifth.
WOMEN’S HIGHLIGHTS
Sophomore Hannah Burvill posted a 1:49.07 in the 200 free to finish fifth and she tallied a sixth-place finish in the 100 back with a time of 55.93, one spot behind senior Meghan Lavelle, who finished fifth with a time of 55.43 in the event.
In the 200 free relay, the quartet of Mekenna Scheitlin, Burvill, Jo Jekel, and Samantha Sauer posted a time of 1:34.72 to finish ninth.
Junior Kelly McNamara finished eighth in the 100 fly with a time of 55.33, and Allyssa Fluit, Burvill, Carly O’Brien, and Lauren Leehy swam to an eighth place finish in the 800-free relay with a time of 7:32.45.
In the diving well, freshman Jayah Mathews dove to an NCAA Zone Standard score of 288.30 off the 3-meter springboard to finish third. Sophomore Thelma Strandberg finished fifth in the event with a season-best score of 276.55.

The Shamrock Invitational will resume Saturday morning at 10:30 a.m. (CT), beginning with the 1,650 freestyle event.
