Mathews, Schemmel Earn B1G Honors

IOWA CITY, Iowa — University of Iowa freshmen, Jayah Mathews and Sarah Schemmel, were named Big Ten Athletes of the Week on Wednesday, it was announced by the league office. Mathews was selected as the Big Ten Diver of the Week, while Schemmel was tabbed as the Freshman of the Week.
 
34535This is the second Big Ten recognition of Mathews’ career. The Sydney, New South Wales, Australia, native was named Big Ten Freshman of the Week on Nov. 1, 2017. She leads the Hawkeyes off the 3-meter springboard with a season-best and NCAA Zone Standard of 315.60.  
 
Mathews won both the 1-meter and 3-meter competition on Feb. 2 in the dual victory over Western Illinois, posting a zone-standard of 284.65 off the 1-meter, before setting her season-best of 315.60 off the 3-meter.
 
This is the first Big Ten honor of Schemmel’s career. The Durant, Iowa, native led the Hawkeyes against Western Illinois in the 50 free, touching in first with a time of 24.10.
 
The Hawkeye women’s swimming and diving team heads to Columbus, Ohio for the 2018 Big Ten Championships from Feb. 14-17.
