Mathews Qualifies for NCAA Championships on Day 1 of Zones

MINNEAPOLIS — Freshman Jayah Mathews dove to an NCAA Championships berth off the 1-meter springboard Monday at the NCAA Zone D Diving Championships at the Jean Freeman Aquatic Center.
 
Mathews advanced to the finals of the 1-meter springboard, finishing with a score of 280.95 in the prelims, sitting in ninth place. The Australia native then totaled 568.00 in the finals, finishing ninth overall.
 
Freshman Anton Hoherz scored a 359.80 off the 3-meter in the prelims before diving to a 721.20 finish overall in the finals to finish 12th.
 
Junior Will Brenner scored a 339.50 off the 3-meter in the prelims before totaling 676.25 in the finals to finish 15th.
 
Thelma Strandberg finished 25th with a score of 253.10 in the prelims, while Morgan Rafferty posed a score of 236.70 to finish 31st. Jacintha Thomas rounded out the Hawkeyes on day one with a 208.40 score in the prelims, finishing 42nd.
 
Senior Matt Mauser scored a 320.85 off the 3-meter in the prelims for a 21st place spot, while Jonatan Posligua finished 27th in the prelims with a score off 263.45.   
 
Action resumes Tuesday with the men competing off the 1-meter springboard and the women off the 3-meter.
