DES MOINES, Iowa — The University of Iowa track and field team arrived at the Drake Relays for a brief but potent opening at the 109th running of the Drake Relays on Thursday.

DISTANCE CARNIVAL
Five Hawkeyes competed in the distance carnival on Thursday evening, led by sophomore Karson Sommer’s seventh place finish in the 1,500 meters.

Sommer ran four seconds off his personal best. Senior Madison Waymire began her final Drake Relays with a 10th place finish in the 5,000 meters. Waymire ran 17:05.59.

Junior Daniel Murphy ran his first 10,000 meter race of the outdoor season, finishing with a time of 31:56.99 and an 18th place finish.

Juniors Bailey Hesse-Withbroe (14:56.19) and Ian Eklin (15:15.28) capped off the night in the men’s 5,000 meters. The duo finished 20th and 23rd, respectively.

The Hawkeyes continue the Drake Relays tomorrow at 9 a.m. (CT) with the women’s distance medley relay.
