IOWA CITY, Iowa — University of Iowa Student-Athletes Academic Services has recognized sophomores Laulauga Tausaga (women’s track and field) and Alex Schaake (men’s golf) as April’s female and male student-athletes of the month.
The honor, voted by their peers, recognizes student-athletes who have excelled not only in their sports, but in the classroom as well.
Tausaga won the shot put or discus competitions in three of Iowa’s four meets in April, including her first Drake Relays Title in the shot put. Her throw of 54-feet, 11.25-inches broke her own school record in the event. In the discus, Tausaga bested her own record at LSU on April 7 with a throw of 196-feet, 5-inches. Tausaga leads the Big Ten in the discus and is fourth in the shot put.
Schaake closed April with two top-20 finishes, including a second-place finish at the Hawkeye Invitational on April 13-14, to help the Hawkeyes finish second as a team in the tournament. Schaake led the team, averaging 71.9 strokes per round during the eight rounds he played in April. At the Big Ten Championships on April 26-29, Schaake helped the Hawkeyes place third as a team as he tied for 18th individually. Iowa has placed in the top four at the last six Big Ten Championships.
