IOWA CITY, Iowa — University of Iowa Student-Athletes Academic Services has recognized senior Jahisha Thomas (women’s track and field) and junior Alex Schaake (men’s golf) as May’s female and male student-athletes of the month.

The honor, voted by their peers, recognizes student-athletes who have excelled not only in their sports, but in the classroom as well.

Thomas won Big Ten championships in the long jump and triple jump at the 2018 Big Ten Outdoor Championships. She became the fourth person in Big Ten history to sweep the events at the indoor and outdoor championships. In addition, Thomas was named the Big Ten Field Athlete of the Championships.

At the NCAA Outdoor Championships, Thomas earned first team All-America honors in the long jump and triple jump. She is the first Hawkeye to earn first team All-America honors in both events at the same meet.

Schaake was an All-Big Ten second team selection at the Big Ten Championships on May 29, finishing 18th overall. He finished the season with an 18-hole average of 71.88, which led the team and was the fourth lowest average in Hawkeye history since the 1991-92 season.

Schaake was also named a Division I PING All-Midwest Regional selection and led Iowa in rounds at or below par and top-10 finishes.

Thomas competes in the British Trials June 30-July 1st.

Schaake will compete in a number of events this summer, including the Sunehanna Am in Pennsylvania and the Nebraska Am, where he is the two-time defending champion.
