Sowinski, Tausaga Earn Bronze Medals at USA Championships

DES MOINES, Iowa — Former University of Iowa All-American Erik Sowinski earned a bronze medal in the 800 meters on the final day of the 2018 USA Track and Field Outdoor Championships on Sunday at Drake Stadium.
 
Sowinski ran 1:47.76 to place third. It was the second bronze medal for the Hawkeyes at the championship event. Sophomore All-American Laulauga Tausaga placed third in the discus Thursday with a personal-best 198-11 (60.65 meters).
 
Hawkeye All-Americans Brittany Brown and Briana Guillory also advanced to the finals of their respective events. Brown placed fifth in the 200 meters with a school record 22.42, and Guillory placed sixth in the 400 meters with a school record 51.30. Brown’s time ranks among the top 20 in the world. 
 
Carter Lilly also hit a PR in the 800 meters. Lilly ran 1:46.95 in the semifinals and was 14 hundredths of a second from advancing to the finals.
 
The 2018 USA Track and Field gold medalists advance to the Athletics World Cup in London on July 14-15 at London Stadium. Sowinski and Tausaga have qualified for the NACAC Senior Championships in Toronto, Canada on Aug. 10-12. Guillory will also compete at NACAC on Team USA’s 1,600-meter relay.
