IOWA CITY, Iowa –The University of Iowa men’s golf program and head coach Tyler Stith announced on Friday that three talented prep student-athletes have signed a National Letter of Intent to attend The University of Iowa. 

Joe Kim (Castle Hill, NSW Australia) will join the program in the spring, while Mac McClear (Hinsdale, Illinois) and Garrett Tighe (Algonquin, Illinois) will be on campus next fall.

Castle Hill, NSW Australia
Cheerybrook Technology High School/Indian Hills Community College

  • Recorded a fifth-place finish at NJCAA Championship
  • Won the 2018 NJCAA National Championship with Indian Hills CC

Hear from Coach Stith: “Joe is great ball-striker and one of the best junior college players in the country. He helped Indian Hills win a National Championship last season. With his talent and experience he can make an immediate impact this spring.”

Mac McClear
Hinsdale, Illinois
Hinsdale Central High School 

  • Fifth ranked golfer in Illinois in the class of 2019
  • Finished fifth at state as an individual the past two years
  • Won the high school team championship three times
  • Recorded a career-best second place finish in the American Junior Golf Association

Hear from Coach Stith: “Mac is such a naturally gifted player. He has been successful at every level of golf statewide and nationally. He has the skill set to be a top performer in the Big Ten conference.”
 
Garrett Tighe
Algonquin, Illinois
Jacobs High School

  • Second ranked golfer in Illinois and 96th nationally in the class of 2019
  • Two-time Northwest All-Area First Team, All-Region, and All-Conference selection
  • Named the 2018 NW Herald Golfer of the Year
  • Earned the first All-State Honors for a golfer at Jacobs High School
  • Placed fifth at the Illinois 3A State Championship in 2018, shooting 72 (E)
  • Led his team to the 2018 Sectionals after finishing first at Illinois Regionals as an individual with a score of 68 (-3)
  • Recorded a second-place finish at the 2017 IJGA Medinah Country Shrine Invitational
  • Finished first at the 2017 Illinois 3A Sectional Gurnee (Warren)
  • Placed first at the 2017 AJGA Under Armour Canadian Championship in Ontario

Hear from Coach Stith: “Garrett has made huge strides over the past year and is a now Top 100 player in the country. He is a very hard worker with a ton of potential. He will have a great Hawkeye career.”
 
The University of Iowa men’s golf team returns to action in the spring at the Big Ten Match Play Championships in Palm Coast, Florida, Feb. 8-9.
