IOWA CITY, Iowa — University of Iowa junior Karayme Bartley has run in two meets for the Hawkeyes this season including the third annual Larry Wieczorek Invitational and the Meyo Invitational.
Bartley specializes in the 400 meters. He ran his indoor collegiate best at the 2019 Wieczorek Invitational in 46.39.
The Lionel Town, Jamaica native also ran the 60 (6.99), 100 (10.87), and 200 (21.18) meters for Iowa Central Community College before transferring to Iowa.
What are you most excited for this season?
“I’m very excited to represent the university and be a part of the 2019 Big Ten Championship team.”
What do you want to achieve this season?
“I want to win the 200 meters at the Big Ten Championships on our track and take home our trophy.”
What made you choose to come to Iowa?
“I lost all the time to Mar’Yea [Harris] and DeJuan [Frye]. I said, ‘they must be doing something I’m not.’ I couldn’t beat them, so I joined them.”
If you could invite anyone to dinner, who would it be?
“Oprah, because she always has gifts.”
What is one thing people don’t know about you?
“I have a tattoo now.”
Do you have any pre-meet rituals?
“I try to stay off my feet, trying to get all the rest I can get.”
When you’re not practicing, what is your favorite thing to do?
“Playing ‘GTA 5’ or trying to play Fortnite. It’s hard.”
What’s your favorite cheesy pick-up line and have you ever used it in real life?
“When Will Smith said, ‘Baby, give me your number before I don’t want it anymore.’ I’ve never used it, but it’s funny.”
If you could choose a super power, what would you choose?
“I’d want to be able to teleport. I feel like everyone would want that too.”
If you could choose anywhere to live, where would you choose?
“I would choose Jamaica. It’s home, and it’s never cold. It’s a win-win.”
If you could trade places with anyone in the world, who would it be?
“Kanye West, because I want to see what’s it’s like to be Yeezus.”
What is your favorite meal?
“Fried chicken, curry gravy with rice and peas. You all don’t know anything about that.”
