Weinberg in 2nd After Day 1 of Puerto Rico Classic

RIO GRANDE, Puerto Rico — University of Iowa junior Benton Weinberg paced the Hawkeye men’s golf team in the first round of the Puerto Rico Classic on Sunday at the par-72 River Course at the Rio Mar Country Club. Iowa finished the round with an 18-hole score of 296 (+6), placing 13th.
 
No. 28 N.C. State leads the 15-team field with a score of 280 (-8), while No. 21 Georgia (282; -6) and No. 4 Georgia Tech (283; -5) round out the top-three. 
 
Weinberg fired five birdies in the first round, including four on the front nine. He shot par or better on 16 holes to finish with a first round score of 69 (-3), tying second heading into round two.
 
Freshman Gonzalo Leal Montero is tied for 23rd after firing three birdies in the first round for a score of 72 (E). Senior Matthew Walker carded an 18-hole score of 75 (+3) with the help of three birdies. He is tied 45th. Junior Alex Schaake finished tied for 72nd (80; +8) and sophomore Jake Rowe posted a first round score of 83 (+11) to put him in 75th.

“Benton played solid today and led the team. We had too many doubles and triples, which proved costly. We need to be sharper tomorrow, execute better, and avoid big numbers.”
 
UP NEXT
The second round of the Puerto Rico Classic will tee off Monday morning at 7 a.m. (CT) with a shotgun start format. Iowa will be paired with No. 5 Alabama and Maryland in round two.
