Schaake Surges 14 Spots in Round 2 of Puerto Rico Classic

RIO GRANDE, Puerto Rico — The University of Iowa men’s golf team moved up two spots on the leaderboard in round two of the Puerto Rico Classic at the par-72 River Course at the Rio Mar Country Club on Monday. The Hawkeyes posted a second-round score of 294 (+6) to finish the day 11th with a two-round score of 590 (+14).
 
No. 4 Georgia Tech is leading the field with a 36-hole score of 565 (-11). No. 28 N.C. State (566; 10) is in second and No. 21 Georgia (568; -8) is in third. The 40th-ranked Hawkeyes led fifth-ranked Alabama by seven strokes heading into the final round.
 
Junior Benton Weinberg is in 18th with a 36-hole score of 143 (-1). He carded a second-round score of 74 (+2). Freshman Gonzalo Leal Montero posted a 75 (+3) in the second round, giving him a two-round score of 147 (+3). He is tied for 37th. Senior Matthew Walker fired four birdies on the back nine on his way to a second-round score of 73 (+1). He moved up three spots on the individual leaderboard, tying 42nd, with a 36-hole score of 148 (+4).
 
Junior Alex Schaake led the Hawkeyes in the second round, surging 14 spots on the individual leaderboard, posting an 18-hole score of 72 (E) in the second round. It is his team leading 10th round at or below par this season. Schaake is tied for 58th with a two-round score of 152 (+8).
 
Sophomore Jake Rowe has a 36-hole score of 161 (+17), tying for 73rd heading into the final round of play on Tuesday morning.
