Iowa in 4th, Schaake in 3rd after Day 1 of Colleton River Collegiate

BLUFFTON, South Carolina — University of Iowa junior Alex Schaake led the Iowa men’s golf team through the first two rounds of the Colleton River Collegiate on Monday at the par-72 Pete Dye River Course.
 
The Hawkeyes are in fourth after posting a two-round total of 577 (+1). Host school Michigan State is in first with a score of 563 (-13). No. 45 Iowa State is second with a score of 567 (-9) and Memphis (575; -1) rounds out the top three.
 
Schaake added to his team leading 11 rounds at or below par, posting two more rounds below par on the first day. After firing an eagle in each round, the junior carded a 68 (-4) in the first round and a 70 (-2) in the second round. He utilized another nine birdies to finish the day in third-place with a 36-hole score of 138 (-6).
 
Junior Benton Weinberg shot a 73 (+1) in the first round. Weinberg fired his seventh round at or below paAor this season, 69 (-3), in the second round to finish with a 36-hole score of 142 (-2).
 
In the second round, senior Matthew Walker moved up 17 spots on the individual leaderboard with an 18-hole score of 70 (-2), his seventh round at or below par this season. He finished the first day tied 20th with a score of 145 (+1).
 
Freshman Gonzalo Leal Montero recorded a 36-hole score of 152 (+8), tying 58th. In his Hawkeye debut, sophomore Joe Kim finished the first two rounds of play with a score of 155 (+11), tying 68th.
