Leal Montero Leads Iowa After Day 1 at Big Tens

FLOURTOWN, Pennsylvania — University of Iowa freshman Gonzalo Leal Montero is tied for fifth place to lead the University of Iowa men’s golf team in round one of the Big Ten Championships. Iowa, ranked 38th nationally, is tied for sixth with an 18-hole score of 293 (+13) at the par-70 Wissahickon Course.
 
The course proved to be difficult on day one as no team, and only seven individuals, are at or below par. Purdue leads the 14-team field with a first-round score of 282 (+2). Illinois (287; +7) and Minnesota (287; +7) are tied for second place to round out the top three.
 
After finishing the front nine with eight holes at or below par, Leal Montero carded three birdies Leal Montero carded three birdies, all on the back nine, to finish the day at even-par (70). Junior Benton Weinberg fired three birdies on Friday to tie for 15th with a score of 71 (+1). Junior Alex Schaake posted an 18-hole score of 75 (+5), tying 36th heading into round two tomorrow. Senior Matthew Walker and sophomore Joe Kim each shot a 76 (+6) in the first round, tying for 47th.
