IOWA CITY, Iowa — The University of Iowa volleyball team (7-9, 1-4) fell to Michigan (12-3, 5-0), 3-1, on Friday night inside Carver-Hawkeye Arena.
Junior Griere Hughes paced Iowa with 17 kills, junior Brie Orr tallied 46 assists, and junior Halle Johnston added 23 digs.

“We’re always fighting to change what the perception of a match is supposed to be and sometimes that is tougher with a young team. Again, we’re coming back strong and teams have to compete against us to beat us and that was proof in the third set. It’s about knowing what you can do, what the other team is doing and how you counterattack. I am proud of how we came out in the third set. The fourth set was back-and-forth, but we need to have attackers to set up and terminate for us at the end of sets.”
HOW IT HAPPENED
SET 1 (25-27) | Iowa surrendered the lead after a quick 6-1 run by the Wolverines, which forced an Iowa timeout. The Hawkeyes began their comeback by chipping away at the lead. Sophomore Courtney Buzzerio and freshman Edina Schmidt both tallied six kills during the set. Iowa forced a Michigan timeout trailing 19-20 and tied the score at 23 after back-to-back blocks by junior Brie Orr and sophomore Hannah Clayton. With both teams tied at 25, an Iowa ball handling error and Michigan ace sealed the first set as Iowa went into the second down one set.
SET 2 (17-25) | Iowa matched Michigan’s energy to begin the second set with both teams trading points through the first ten points. Iowa allowed a 5-1 run by the Wolverines to fall behind 13-17 as the Hawkeyes began to play with some urgency. Kills from junior Griere Hughes and sophomore Amiya Jones kept Iowa within striking distance, but Michigan took a second consecutive ace off a service ace.
SET 3 (25-19) | Iowa found renewed fight and opened a 10-1 run on the Wolverines, forcing them to burn both timeouts during the run. Iowa continued to dominate out of the timeout. Freshman Kyndra Hansen recorded back-to-back blocks and Courtney Buzzerio added a pair of kills for Iowa’s 19th and 20th points. Iowa cruised to their first set victory as they began their comeback attempt.
SET 4 (23-25) | The fourth set was the closest with neither team gaining a clear advantage. Iowa grabbed a 13-12 lead and forced a Michigan timeout, but Michigan responded to take a 16-18 lead to force an Iowa timeout. Iowa gave up a 5-0 Wolverine run to call its second timeout and answered with a 4-0 run of their own off three straight Hughes kills. A close call gave Michigan a 22-21 lead, but Iowa challenged the play and it was overturned to give Iowa a 22-21 lead. However, Michigan closed out the match off an Iowa error and kill to steal the set and match.
