Rients’ 11 Blocks Leads Iowa to Victory

IOWA CITY, Iowa — The University of Iowa volleyball team (8-11, 2-6) defeated Indiana (12-9, 1-7) in four sets inside Carver-Hawkeye Arena on Sunday afternoon.

Donning gold jerseys for their alumni match, sophomore Courtney Buzzerio led Iowa with 15 kills and a career-high six blocks, junior Brie Orr moved into fifth place on Iowa’s all-time assist leaderboard with 40 assists, and junior Halle Johnston tied a career-high with 30 digs.

“The one thing we always talk with the players about is trusting that your teammate will do their job and they showed that trust allows a little less pressure on the person who has to execute. That’s why we had so many good numbers from Halle (Johnston) who had 30 digs and Kyndra (Hansen) who had another double-digit kill match.”

HOW IT HAPPENED
SET 1 (20-25) | Iowa took a quick 3-0 to begin the match that included a kill and block from freshman Blythe Rients. Indiana came back to tie the set at three as both teams remained even through 15 points. After capitalizing on Hoosier errors, Iowa forced an Indiana timeout leading 19-16. Iowa surrendered a seven-point run as Indiana took a 23-19 lead. A dump by junior Brie Orr attempted to change the pace, but Indiana took the first set.

SET 2 (26-24) | The Hoosiers put the Hawkeyes on their heels to begin the second set with a 4-0 run. Iowa answered with a four-point run of their own as both teams’ settled into a rhythm for the remainder of the set. Iowa called a timeout trailing 19-20 a trailed for a majority of the final stages of the match. Kills by Rients kept Iowa close and with the score tied at 24, Iowa rallied with three consecutive kills from sophomores Courtney Buzzerio and Hannah Clayton to take the second set, 26-24.

SET 3 (25-9) | The Hawkeyes rose to the occasion in the third set, limiting Indiana to nine points as the Hawkeyes tallied six blocks in the set.  Iowa opened on a 5-1 run and kept piling on and finished on a 10-3 run. Iowa never trailed in the set.

SET 4 (25-17) | After a dominating third set, the Hawkeyes looked to keep control and close out the match in the fourth. Iowa led 12-9 before Indiana called its first timeout. A couple kills from junior Griere Hughes out of the timeout opened Iowa’s lead to 15-10 as victory was within sight. Iowa continued to stretch its lead and closed the set on a kill by Clayton.
