IOWA CITY, Iowa — Three University of Iowa volleyball players — Joslyn Boyer, Courtney Buzzerio, and Maddie Slagle — are set to try out for the US Women’s national Team at the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Training Center in Colorado, Springs, Colorado, Feb. 21-23.
The trio of athletes join 211 athletes from 93 colleges vying for spots on the National Team and U.S. College National Team programs. The tryout will be led by three-time Olympic gold medalist Karch Kiraly.
Each athlete will have one tryout session on Friday, one morning and afternoon session on Saturday and wrap up the tryout with a session on Sunday morning.
Boyer, a freshman from Downers Grove, Illinois, led all freshmen in playing time in 2019, amassing 161 digs and 15 service aces to tie for third in the team. Boyer set a career-best 14 digs in a five-set victory over Indiana on Oct. 26, 2019.
Buzzerio, a sophomore from Chino Hills, California, enjoyed a career year in her second season at Iowa. Buzzerio tallied 305 kills and 263 assists in 115 sets played. Buzzerio also became the first Hawkeye since 2005 to record a triple double with 18 kills, 20 assists, and 10 digs at Nebraska on Nov. 6. Buzzerio’s 32 services aces are tied for the most in a season since 2015 and her 0.30 aces per set is the most since 2010.
Slagle, a sophomore from Cedar Rapids, Iowa, played in every set for the Hawkeyes in 2019. Slagle notched a career-high 219 digs and 11 service aces in 31 matches. Slagle set a career high with 16 digs against Wyoming on Sept. 13, 2019. She finished the season with double-digit digs in her final two matches.
