Jeff Schmid Wins Iowa PGA Senior Match Play, Match Play

IOWA CITY, Iowa — Former University of Iowa men’s golf student-athlete and assistant coach Jeff Schmid won the season long Iowa PGA Senior Match Play by defeating Dave Ranney in the final match, 1 up. Schmid was also victorious in the Match Play Championship by defeating Darin Fisher in the final match, 4 & 3.

The season long Senior Match Play and Match Play was a single elimination Championship. Players were seeded upon last year’s Player of the Year points list. Both Championships were broken into an East and West Brackets with the winner from each region facing off in the Championships.

Schmid, who is a PGA Teaching Professional at Brown Deer Golf Club, earned a first-round bye in the East Bracket of the 2020 Match Play due his Player of the Year Points in 2019 as the No. 2 seed in the East Bracket. He faced Brian Delaney in the second round defeating him 1 up. He then went on to knock off Brian Wernimont, 1 up, in the third round. In the fourth round of the East Bracket, Schmid faced Adam Kaufman and defeated him, 1 up. He then faced Tracy Vest in the East Bracket Championship. Schmid played well and defeated Vest, 2 & 1.

After advancing out of their respected brackets Schmid and Fisher squared off in the Championship match at Blue Top Ridge in Riverside, Iowa where Schmid was victorious, 4 & 3 in the Match.

Schmid’s path to his Senior Match Play Championship. Schmid was the No. 2 seed in the East Bracket. He won the first round against Mike Armes, 5 & 3. He faced John Bermel in the second round defeating him 2 & 1. He then bounced David Edwards, 3 & 2 in the East Bracket Championship. In the final match Schmid defeated Dave Ranney, 1 up, to win the 2020 Senior Match Play Championship.

Schmid was a team captain and four-year letterwinner with the Hawkeyes (1987-90). He earned All-Big Ten honors in 1989 and Academic All-Big Ten accolades in 1990. Schmid received medalist honors at six tournaments during his Hawkeye career including the Gopher-Hazeltine Invitational in the fall of 1988, the Purdue Invitational twice in 1988 and 1989, the Spartan Invitational in 1989, and the Drake Relays Invitational in 1989.

Schmid returned to Iowa City in 2016, serving as an assistant coach for two seasons. He helped guide the Hawkeyes to an NCAA Regional appearance in 2017, and helped mentor Iowa to three top-three finishes, including a third place finish at the Big Ten Championships in 2018.
