Hawkeyes set 5 PR's on day 1 of SPIRE B1G Invite

GENEVA, Ohio — The University of Iowa track and field team recorded five career bests Friday at the first day of the SPIRE Big Ten Invitational.

In the men’s 600 meters, junior Julien Gillum led Iowa finishing second with a time of 1:18.59. Freshman Spencer Gudgel and sophomores Alec Still, Tyler Olson and Josh Andrews followed in fourth, fifth, sixth and eighth. Gudgel and Still recorded new career bests with times of 1:18.68 and 1:19.10.

In the women’s 600 meters, freshman Clare Pitcher led a quartet of Hawkeyes placing fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth. Freshman Katie Moore placed eighth with a new career best 1:35.34.

Junior Mariel Bruxvoort was the lone Hawkeye in the women’s 200 meters, finishing second in her heat and 12th overall with a time of 25.57.

In the men’s 200 meters, Austin Kresley finished third in 21.23. Freshmen Khullen Jefferson placed ninth in 21.82 and Drake Woody finished 15th in a career best 22.24.

“We had a decent day today at Spire. No big PR’s, but it was good to see athletes compete near their PR’s. I anticipate seeing even better performances tomorrow.”

The Hawkeyes return to action Saturday at 11 a.m. at the SPIRE Big Ten Invitational.
