Iowa Holds 14th Place at Minnesota Invite

INDEPENDENCE, Minn. – The University of Iowa men’s golf team is in 14th place followinthe first two rounds of the Gopher Invitational. The Hawkeyes opened with a 292 score (+8) in the first round and completed the day with a 295 total at the par 71 Windsong Farm Golf Club.

Freshman Ian Meyer and senior Gonzalo Leal Montero lead the Hawkeyes through the first two rounds. Meyer is even par after 36 holes, while Leal Montero opened with a 71 in the first round before closing his day at two over par in the second round. Meyer is tied for 21st as the lowest Hawkeye.

Meyer totaled three birdies in his opening round, before adding four birdies in the afternoon, those coming in his final 10 holes. Leal Montero shot even par on each nine in the morning before shooting one over par on each nine in the afternoon.

Junior Mac McClear began the day with a 76 in the first round before carding a 74 in the second round. Sophomore Callum Macfie, making his Hawkeye debut, carded rounds of 74 and 79. Senior Jake Rowe had rounds of 79 and 77 for a 156 total through 36 holes. Rowe’s highlight came in the second round when he recorded a hole-in-one on the seventh hole, a 180-yard par three.

Junior Ronan Kleu, who led the Hawkeyes with a Top 20 finish in the opening tournament of the fall, is not participating due to illness.

“It’s disappointing how we played because the conditions were absolutely perfect. We’re obviously not satisfied with where we stand. I have full confidence we will bounce back Monday. Ian performed well today. He didn’t have his best ball striking round but managed his game and posted two solid rounds. He showed a lot of maturity and discipline.”

HAWKEYE NOTEABLES

  • Senior Jake Rowe had Iowa’s only eagle in the first two rounds, carding an ace on the 180-yard par three seventh hole.
  • Meyer leads the Hawkeyes with eight birdies through 36 holes, followed by McClear and Macfie (6 each), Leal Montero (5), and Rowe (two birdies and an ace). Meyer’s total ties for ninth among the entire field.
