Iowa in Second at Hawkeye Invitational

IOWA CITY, Iowa – The University of Iowa men’s golf team is in second place after Saturday’s opening two rounds of play at the Hawkeye Invitational. Iowa carries a team score of 574 (-2) through 36 holes at Finkbine Golf Course, while junior Garrett Tighe leads the Hawkeyes at six-under par (138). Twenty-eighth ranked Kansas leads the field (-10).

Tighe posted a 65 (-7) in the second round to earn a tie for first in the individual standings. The Algonquin, Illinois, native was seeing red in round two, draining eight birdies despite cold and windy conditions, including five straight to finish the round on holes two through six. The round marks a career low 18-hole score as a Hawkeye.

Tighe’s four-under par (3.8) stroke average on par fours leads the field after two rounds, while his 10 birdies match the third lowest score in the field.

Junior Mac McClear is close behind, sitting in fifth on the leaderboard with a 144 (-2) 36-hole score. McClear also finished strong, posting a 68 (-4) in the second round.

Senior Gonzalo Leal Montero is next for the Hawkeyes, tying for 20th with a 149 (+3) 36-hole score. In total, all eight members of Iowa’s roster saw action on Saturday, including freshman Carlos Roldos for the first time this season.

“Today was challenging with the wind and cold. Garrett [Tighe] and Mac [McClear] played great this afternoon. They were 11-under par combined and gave us a chance to win tomorrow.”
