LAS VEGAS – Incoming University of Iowa women’s wrestler Nanea Estrella advanced to the finals of the 59kg weight class at the U.S. Open Senior Nationals on Thursday at the South Point Hotel, Casino and Spa in Las Vegas.
Estrella, the No. 2 seed, outscored her two opponents, 21-0, to advance to Friday’s championship match. She will face top-seeded Xochitl Mota Pettis of Rise Wrestling. Medal matches begin at 6 p.m. (CT).
With her performance, Estrella qualifies to compete at the Senior World Team Trials from May 21-22 at Xtreme Arena in Coralville, Iowa.
Estrella signed with the Hawkeyes in April after being an NAIA finalist at Menlo (Calif.) College. She was the national runner-up at 130 pounds, the Cascade Collegiate Conference champion and an All-CCC selection after posting an 18-2 overall record.
