McClear, Kleu Qualify for NCAA Regionals

IOWA CITY, Iowa – University of Iowa juniors Mac McClear and Ronan Kleu have been selected as NCAA Regional individual qualifiers. Both Hawkeyes will compete at the Jimmie Austin OU Golf Club in Norman, Oklahoma, for an opportunity to advance to the 2022 NCAA Championships. Regional competition over 54 holes will be held May 16-18.

The Norman regional is hosted by the University of Oklahoma, with 13 teams and 10 individuals battling it out for five team spots and one individual bid to the 2022 NCAA Championships at Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale, Arizona.

McClear checks in as the third seed at the regional site, while Kleu is listed as the sixth seed. The Hawkeye duo, who each earned second-team-All Big Ten honors on Wednesday, will be the only Big Ten Conference golfers at the site. Baylor’s Johnny Keefer is the No. 1 individual seed, with golfers from Belmont, Chattanooga, Colorado, Louisiana Tech, Middle Tennessee, and North Texas also represented in the field of individuals.

McClear led the Hawkeyes this season with a 72.3 stroke average, posting seven top 25 finishes in Iowa’s 10 outings, including four top 10 finishes and a fifth-place effort at the Hawkeye Invitational. Kleu was second on the team with a 72.9 stroke average and has posted two top 10 finishes this season.

“Mac and Ronan have earned this opportunity,” says Head Coach Tyler Stith. “Their consistency on and off the golf course has led to their success this season.”

The NCAA Championships are scheduled for May 27-June 1 at Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale, Arizona.
