WELDON SPRINGS, Mo. – University of Iowa senior Mac McClear will compete at the US Amateur from Aug. 15-21 at the Ridgewood Country Club in Paramus, New Jersey. The two-time All-Big Ten honoree will be joined by Iowa alumnus Benton Weinberg (‘21), who also qualified for a spot among the world’s best amateurs.
McClear punched his ticket with a second-place finish at the Persimmon Woods Golf Club qualifying tournament, scoring 135 (-7) through two rounds, to finish one stroke back from medalist Timmy Crawford. McClear posted a six-under par second round of 65 to shoot up the leaderboard and secure one of four qualifying positions at the event.
Weinberg tied for second at Worthington Manor, finishing six-under par through 36 holes to nab one of five qualifying bids.
A native of Hinsdale, Illinois, McClear’s round of 65 was one stroke away from the career low 64 he posted at the Puerto Rico Classic in 2022. McClear has twice been a medalist in his career at Iowa, including at the 2021 Big Ten Championships. He earned PING All-Midwest honors this season for the second consecutive year after leading the Hawkeyes with four top 10 finishes and a 72.2 stroke average.
McClear finished the 2022 spring season with a 14th-place effort at NCAA Regionals, where he qualified individually. In his last competition he competed at the US Open final qualifier in Springfield, Ohio, after finishing as co-medalist at the local qualifier in Riverside, Iowa.
