Hawkeyes Through 2 Rounds at Fighting Irish Classic

SOUTH BEND, Ind. – The University of Iowa men’s golf team teed off the season on Sunday at Warren Golf Course for the Fighting Irish Classic. Iowa is in 13th place heading into the final round.

Senior Mac McClear leads the way at even par, bouncing back from a three-over par 73 (+3) in the morning to finish the day with a 67 (-3) in the second round. McClear posted a bogey free front nine and finished with five birdies in round two.

Four of five Hawkeye golfers lowered their scores in the second round. Junior Callum Macfie improved eight strokes in round two, shooting an even-par 70. Fifth-year senior Gonzalo Leal Montero recorded Iowa’s only other round below par, shooting 69 (-1) with four birdies in the second round.

Iowa is competing in the opening event without a returning captain and one of its low returning scorers from last season due to injury.

HAWKEYE NOTABLES

  • McClear’s 2.75 (-2) stroke average on par threes ties for the second lowest in the field; As a team, Iowa’s 4.55 (-9) stroke average on par fives ties for third heading into the third round.
  • Leal Montero and McClear each recorded a team-high six birdies on Sunday. The Hawkeyes have combined for 24 birdies through two rounds.
