Hinkle Named to PAC-12/Big Ten Challenge Team

BOULDER, Colo. — University of Iowa volleyball fell to Colorado, 3-0, Sunday afternoon at the CU Events Center in the PAC-12/Big Ten Challenge. Senior Mari Hinkle was named to the all-tournament team.

Outside hitters Michelle Urquhart and Edina Schmidt led the Hawkeyes, registering seven kills each. Redshirt senior Lily Tessier registered 25 assists and Hinkle tallied 14 digs to lead the team, respectively. Senior Amiya Jones led the team registering four aces throughout the match.

HOW IT HAPPENED

SET 1 (CU, 25-20): Scoring went back-and-forth from the start. Jones recorded back-to-back aces to take the lead, 7-6. Colorado pulled ahead by four after two kills, two aces and an error, taking the lead, 18-12. The Buffaloes stayed ahead the rest of the set despite Iowa’s efforts to push back. Iowa tallied kills throughout the end of the set, but in the end, Colorado maintained their lead to secure the set victory.

SET 2 (CU, 25-16): The Hawkeyes came out strong to open the second set and took the, 3-1, early lead. Colorado then got back into the set and took a 5-4 lead. From there it was back and forth between the two teams, but the Buffaloes did not relinquish the lead. Iowa was forced to take time outs with the score at 18-14 and then 22-16 in favor of Colorado. The Buffaloes came out of the time out strong and went on a 5-0 scoring run to close out the second set victory.

SET 3 (CU, 25-21): Iowa opened the third set strong again, taking a 4-1 lead. Colorado came back even stronger going on a 5-0 run to take a 7-5 lead and force a Hawkeye timeout. The Hawkeyes came back with their own 3-0 run to tie the score at 10-10. The two teams exchanged back and forth points before Colorado took the 17-12 lead and forced an Iowa timeout. On two separate occasions, the Hawkeyes went on 3-0 scoring runs to keep the score close. In the end, Colorado was able to close out the set and secure the match victory.

UP NEXT

The Hawkeyes travel to Ames, Iowa, for the Cardinal and Gold Challenge. On Friday Iowa will face Wright State at 11 a.m. CT and then face off in the Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk Series game against Iowa State at 6:30 p.m. CT. On Saturday, the team will face Drake at 2:30 p.m. CT. All matches will be played at the Hilton Coliseum and will be streamed on ESPN+ (subscription required).
