Hawkeyes Fall to No. 9 Minnesota

CORALVILLE, Iowa – University of Iowa volleyball fell to No. 9 Minnesota, 3-0, Wednesday night in Xtream Arena.

HOW IT HAPPENED

SET 1 (Minn., 25-22): Minnesota got the early lead with a 3-0 run. The Hawkeyes were staying in the set as the two teams were going back-and-forth. Back-to-back points for the Gophers got the score to 10-6. Iowa took a timeout as Minnesota extended their lead to six. Four straight Iowa points forced a Minnesota timeout with their lead at 18-15. Two straight Hawkeye kills gets the score to 20-18. Iowa’s points were coming in twos as the were keeping the deficit within reason. Another kill for Iowa brought them within one, 23-22. The Gophers closed out the set with two straight kills.

SET 2 (Minn., 25-15): Minnesota opened the set strong and was able to get out to a 6-2 lead and force Iowa to take an early timeout. A 8-0 run for the Gophers put them up big, 11-2 and the Hawkeyes take their second timeout. Minnesota was able to get another three straight to extend their lead to 11. Iowa came to life with a 3-0 run to get the score to 16-8. Minnesota was in control the entire set, and closed out it out in commanding fashion.

SET 3 (Minn., 25-11): The Gophers jumped out to an early lead again, thanks to a 4-0 run to take the 6-1 lead. Iowa was able to get three straight to get within two with the Minnesota lead at 6-4. Another four straight from Minnesota extended their lead to seven. The Hawkeyes were able to get a few points here and there, but the Golden Gophers controlled the momentum through the end of the set.

The Hawkeyes hit the road for another ranked Big Ten match up. They will face No. 6 Ohio State in Columbus, Ohio on Friday October 21 in the Covelli Center. First serve is set for 6 p.m. CT and will be streamed on B1G+ (subscription required).
