KLIPPAN, Sweden – University of Iowa freshman Ella Schmit competed at the Klippan Women’s Open in Klippan, Sweden, this weekend.
Schmit traveled with Team USA and competed at 62kg in the senior women’s freestyle category. Schmit started her weekend pinning Mathilde Guedon of France in 3:32. In the second round, Schmit fell to Japan’s Suzu Sasaki, the eventual gold medalist, being pinned in 0:51. In the bronze-medal match, Schmit lost to Lydia Perez Tourino of Spain, via technical fall, 11-0.
Schmit finished the weekend 1-2, taking fifth place overall.
As a team, Team USA finished fourth out of the 26 teams competing. Of the nine senior women who competed in freestyle, five placed top three, including one gold medalist.
Schmit is competing unattached in 2022-23. Iowa announced in September 2021 it would become the first Division I Power Five school to add women’s wrestling. The Hawkeyes begin competing in 2023-24.
